Closed-Loop Control Systems: Ensuring Precision and Stability

Understanding the Basics

A closed-loop control system, also referred to as a feedback control system, revolutionizes the world of automation and regulation. Its unique design hinges upon the concept of an open-loop system, yet it introduces a crucial element: feedback.

The Power of Feedback

In a closed-loop control system, a portion of the system's output is redirected back as an input. This feedback mechanism allows the system to continuously monitor its performance against a predefined desired state or set point. By incorporating feedback, the system can automatically adjust its control actions to maintain the desired outcome.

Two-Way Communication

Closed-loop control systems feature two-way signal flow. Input signals, such as commands or references, are sent to the controller. The controller then calculates the appropriate control action, which is transmitted to the system as an output signal. Crucially, the system's output is also measured and fed back to the controller, completing the feedback loop.

Closed-Loop Controllers

The heart of a closed-loop control system lies in its controller. A feedback controller, unlike an open-loop controller, continuously incorporates feedback into its decision-making process. By comparing the system's output to the desired value, the controller can determine the necessary adjustments to ensure the system's performance remains within the desired range.
